The story behind the white spotted Eiffle tower

This seems to be quite an iconic picture on Instagram and Facebook with over 10k likes. I never imagined that so many people would like it. I had taken this picture in 2010 during the Bastille day of France. I was studying photography then at Speos international school of photography. This was my first time being outside of India. I was free to do as I please, go where I wanted, take pictures of what I liked without any restrictions.

I have several pictures of the Eiffel tower, but this one will always be special to me. It was the 14th of July, a Wednesday, the weather was great and there was excitement in the air. I did my research and found out that the best possible view would be from a place called Trocadéro which is in between the 7th and the 8th arrondissement. I went to the location well in advance, there was already a crowd developing there, people were partying, enjoying. There was music in the air, the smell of crêpes and other delicious food. I found a spot I liked, the sun had not set yet. I set up my gear, opened up my tripod and adjusted it to the frame I wanted. Took a few sample shots and waited. The crowd started to grow very quickly. As the sun was setting, the place was jam-packed. You couldn’t move, I sat underneath my tripod and waited patiently. I hadn’t eaten, I did not have water with me, I was totally unprepared for this kind of a crowd. But boy was it exhilarating.

The fireworks were supposed to start at 12 AM, While I did want a picture of the fireworks too, I wanted the picture of a white spotted Eiffel tower even more. For those of you who want to see the picture of the fireworks falling down on the tower, please let me know in the Contact Us section and I will post it for you.

It was finally closing towards midnight, the crowd started to get impatient and then suddenly the tower turned completely dark. All the lights were off. And the tower began to sparkle. It was truly a magical moment that lead to a magical photograph.
